Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to common questions about driving lessons, bookings and test preparation in Melbourne.
How can I prepare for my driving test in Melbourne’s west?
Practice observation, signalling, speed control, safe gap selection, parking and each manoeuvre you may be asked to perform. Pay attention to school zones, pedestrian activity and hazard perception, and avoid common errors such as failing to give way. A qualified driving instructor can identify weak spots before your appointment, and extra practise on local roads builds familiarity with the area.
Are driving test routes the same every time?
Don’t assume every test follows the same route. Test routes often include a mix of residential streets and busier arterial roads, and the examiner will direct you through varied traffic conditions. Expect to demonstrate safe lane positioning, correct speed limit awareness, and confident handling of roundabouts, intersections and multi-lane roads.
Will passing in an automatic car affect my licence?
If you pass your probationary drive test in an automatic car, an automatic-transmission condition generally applies during your probationary period. Check the official licence conditions guidance for details and exceptions.
Does VicRoads provide a car for the driving test?
No. VicRoads does not supply vehicles for drive tests. Arrange a suitable vehicle yourself or with your driving school or instructor, ideally one you’ve practised in during your driving lessons.
What should I bring to my driving test?
Bring your learner permit or required identification, evidence of completed supervised hours if applicable, and a vehicle that meets the official test requirements. Check your booking confirmation for any additional instructions.
